Aetna's History

Aetna began in 1850 as Aetna Insurance Company. Its name was inspired by a volcano in Sicily, named Mt. Etna which was the most active volcano in Europe at the time. In 1853, Aetna changed its name to Aetna Life Insurance Company and established itself in Hartford, Connecticut, where the corporate headquarters are located today.

Since 1972, when Aetna formed the Aetna Foundation, it has established itself as a leader of philanthropic ventures through the foundation's charitable funding of various community programs.
