Company History: Phoenix Life Insurance

Phoenix Life was founded in 1851 in Hartford, CT as the American Temperance Life Insurance Company. They only insured individuals who abstained from alcohol. In their 150+ year history, Phoenix Life is credited with a number of "firsts" including: starting a $5000 fund to help victims of the Chicago fire of 1871 - "the first recorded act of corporate giving;" in 1955, being the first company to recognize that women live longer than men and offering women discounted rates; and in 1967, being the first company to offer discounts to all nonsmokers. They currently have their headquarters in Hartford, CT in the world's first "two-sided boat building" which they built in 1963 and is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places.
