The state of Louisiana is unique in that its political areas are divided into parishes rather than counties, which reflects its French heritage. It was originally part of New France, ruled by the French until 1802, when Napoleon III was forced to sell it to the US in the Louisiana Purchase.

The southern state, which resembles a boot with the sole jutting out into the Gulf of Mexico, is 31st in area, although that's rather in flux due to flood control measures along the Mississippi river and coastal land area that is disappearing. Its population is also in flux while its largest city, New Orleans, still struggles to recover from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Hurricane Katrina, as well as other unexpected tragedies, often lead people to think more about their financial security and life insurance.

Since 2002, the Louisiana Department of Insurance and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners has held an annual Get Smart About Insurance Week in which they encourage consumers to buy insurance (including life insurance) only from agents licensed to do business in Louisiana, to shop around for the best rates, and to have an "annual checkup" to make sure that their insurance coverage is still appropriate from year to year.

Louisiana Offices Responsible for Life Insurance

The Department of Insurance for Louisiana has a host of resources. These resources include how to file a complaint against an insurance company and how to locate a life insurance policy for a deceased person.

If your insurance company has been declared insolvent, you may still be able to get your policies paid by contacting the Louisiana Life & Health Insurance Guaranty Association which was created by a statute in 1991. If a member company goes bankrupt, the association will meet its liabilities.

Louisiana's legal statues governing life insurance are set out in Title 37. These 426 pages of regulations cover the complete life insurance process including how companies become licensed and how they must conduct their business.
